A Seriously Froody Website
The End of an ErajawaproFri 30/03/2007 10:00 AM
Last night I watched the final episode of Season 10 of Stargate SG1.
And it wasnt a bad episode - but not a great one either.
But it is possibly the very last Stargate SG1 episode EVER.
The show has been canceled.
They are currently planning to make some TV movies - but this is the last planned regular episode.
10 seasons - that´s a jolly good innings.
I can still remember when the very first episode came out. Marcus and I were both very excited because we´d enjoyed the original movie.
And I remember many nights of rushing home from scouts to watch Stargate.
And setting the video to tape before I went somewhere.
It´s been a part of my life for almost 10 years - that´s pretty impressive. No wonder I have so many memories that involve Stargate.
So it was a sad moment when I watched the last episode and it suddenly hit me that it is quite possibly the last time I´ll ever watch a new SG1 episode (not including the promised movies).
Had a rather nostalgic moment there.
At least we still have Stargate Atlantis for at least one more season.

Great News - the war has begun!jawaproTue 27/03/2007 10:00 AM
I got a phone call from EBGames yesterday to let me know that my copy of Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium War is avaliable for pickup.
I cant wait to get it.
My PC has been playing up really badly lately - but hopefully it will be able to play this without locking up every few minutes (like it currently does with SupCom and HalfLife2).
To be honest - watching the trailers makes the gameplay look very hectic and not terribly easy to use. But the movie clips and the story are enough for me to want to play this game anyway.
I´ll pick the game up on Saturday when I´m in town and I´ll let you know what I think when I actually play it.
I cant wait.

Hey guys - I just thought I´d show you this.
This is my latest piece of junk from ebay.
Its a model Star Destroyer.
And I think it looks very nice on my computer at work. I´ve had a lot of people comment on it so far.
That - and my Serenity wallpaper.

Railex 07jawaproMon 19/03/2007 11:00 AM
All Aboard!
Well – I had a great time this weekend – for the most part.
Mike (Oblivion) and I headed down to Evendale for Railex. And we had a ball.
For those who don’t know – Railex is a big exhibition (well maybe you’d say it’s small – but it’s fairly large) of model trains and similar.
There were 20 or so model layouts – a couple of shops, and a couple of other assorted odds and ends.
Some of the detail in these models are incredible.
I hadn’t been in years – and it was Mike’s first trip to Railex. We got our complementary ride on the small scale rail-way out the back. The engine we were being towed by was a fake diesel and sounds like it uses a lawn-mower engine. And it broke down half way around!!! But they got it going again.
I used to collect model trains – and I even had half a layout. It was being done from convention (school competitions) and so we ended up doing a rush job on some of it – and then it lived under my bed for ages and fell apart – so we finally tossed the layout out when I moved house.
But I still have all the trains – and I still have grand plans of making another layout.
But I have half decided that I’d probably prefer a smaller scale. I think my trains are 00 scale – which means they are about the scale of a matchbox car (so you can use matchbox cars in your layout!) but the smaller ‘N’ scale trains can fit a lot more on a smaller layout – so that would be nicer for someone like me with a lack of room (that’s really why I never finished the old one).
But since I have a heap of trains and things – I think my first layout will be 00 or H0 or whatever my trains are.
And Railex isn’t just about trains either. The also have boats and planes and things. And I was particularly impressed with this – a remote control submarine. You can dive it and everything. In the murky pond you couldn’t even see it when it dived.
Very awesome.
So was the remote control Viking ship that actually rowed. Unfortunately I ran out of batteries in my camera (serves me right for not charging them).
Very cool time though.

Website changes....jawaproWed 14/03/2007 11:00 AM
New User Accounts....
And changes to the website
I woke up this morning – and there were 5 new accounts registered at my website since last night.
And they were all spam.
Or at least I think they were all spam – my forums only send me the user name for the new user – and I’ve occasionally deactivated someone because I didn’t realise their username was legit (sorry mlipsy!)
At the moment to register for my site – you have to pass one of those “Prove you’re not a bot” tests – but it seems bots are smart enough to get around this.
So I’ve set it up to email me everytime someone registers, so I can decide if they are legit. But it dosnt send me enough information about them – so it’s a real pain.
In case you’re wondering what’s so bad about all these bots registering at my website – well a while back when I was allowing them to register without my manual approval, I kept getting posts in my forums advertising Viagra or porn sites or something.
Not exactly the sort of posts I want.
I’ve been planning to update my website for a while now – but I was planning to hold off until PhpBB3 comes out. Currently my forums are running PhpBB2 – which is very good, but I was hoping the new one might solve some of these bot problems.
But maybe PhpBB3 will be no better – and who knows when it’ll come out. I checked the PhpBB website – and apparently it’s gone down with hardware failure – so I couldn’t find out any more about it. It might even be out already.
So I had a chat about it with Bob – my new security expert.
(See previous post to meet Bob)
Bob had some interesting points to make. If I had written the forum software (or wanted to dig into it enough to understand it) then I could change the way registrations work.
Probably not stop the bots from registering – but making it easier for me to tell who was a bot and who wasn’t.
But alas – I don’t know my way around phpBB2 well enough to be able to do that.
But then Bob had a brainstorm. Why do we need phpBB2?
Not a bad question.
PhpBB2 (and phpBB3 for that matter) are excellent forums. They do heaps of stuff right out of the box – and you can get heaps of add-ons for them.
But do I really need such a complex forum for my website?
Well – lets take a look.
We currently have 179 registered users.
About 15 of them are legit.
About 4 of the above are actually me.
About 5 of the remaining actually post on the website.
And only 2 (apart from me) post on the forums at all regularly. A few more leave comments on the blog – but it’s not exactly a huge number.
So my forums aren’t really used a lot – and hardly any of the ‘extra’ features of phpBB2 are used at all.
So I could ditch the lot and write my own simple forum.
It’d be a lot less sophisticated than phpBB2 – but it’d be better integrated with my website.
And I’d be able to show people my website – and say “I wrote that whole site” without haven’t to explain that I didn’t write the forums.
And you know what – I think Bob had a fantastic idea there.
So my current plan is – when I do redo my website (whenever that happens to be) – I’ll write my own comment board/forum and ditch phpBB2.
But I want feedback. If you guys think it’s a terrible idea – let me know.
You can comment here or post on the forums (http://www.jawapro.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=117) where I already have a topic asking for thoughts about the next version of this website.
I am also working on another project to update my church’s website – so that might hold this project back a little – but that’s ok. It’s not as big a job as this one is.
Anyway – let me know what you think.
