I just killed the proxy server

Ok - so I´ve now officially screwed up at work once.

At least it wasnt anything too drastic.

I was building a test proxy server to replace the old Getbusi one that´s running out of hdd space because postgres isnt clearing the space when records are deleted (dont know why).

Anyway - I was restoring the Getbusi config file to my new server (currently named GetLazy) and apparently the config file also includes the IP address - and suddenly GetLazy decided it was the main proxy and wiped out the real one.

I yanked the network cable out of getlazy and scrambled around trying to work out which of our many servers was the getbusi one so I could reboot. Thankfully Linux is nice and managed to recover itself before I found it - and everything went smoothly.

Not even one phone call about not being able to access the net. Given another few minutes and I expect we´d have been flooded by them.

Ah well - could have been worse... much worse...

I could have killed the reservations system.... *Shudders*

Just got back...

 Image

Hey guys.

I just got back from a long weekend camping with my family.

Great fun. We didnt really have anywhere to go - and so we just wandered around the mid-north-west of the state and camped for a few nights.

Nice relaxing break from life in general.

Some people find it hard to believe that I like going camping up the bush - without my precious computers and stuff (not even a laptop) but I do actually really enjoy it.

Hope you had a good break too - and didnt eat too much chocolate all at once.

Stay froody guys!

JP

Confession

I have a confession to make:

I am the infamous Whale-man

 Image

Ok - so now it´s finally out there. I am the guy who was posing as Whale-Man.

Sorry John...

Ok - so now for the story.

Way way way back in 2005 my friend John started writting a story called "Fire under the summer night sky". It was about a guy called Arch.

Anyway - me being the sort of guy I am - decided to write a parody of his story - called " Fire under the summer Knight´s sky".

The parody was about a character called Whale-Man Arch.

Anyway - it ended up annoying John a lot - mostly because he had no idea who was doing it. And the mystery has remained.

Until today.

Today I confessed to John that I was the evil Whale-Man Arch. He just laughed. He´d been sure for years that it was one of his friends - and now he found it was me.

Anyway - the thing that bought it back up again was my friend Mr Conrad writing some rather bizzar (you could say stupid) stories. After much bugging he has managed to convince me to put some up in the stories page.

Anyway - he had run out of ideas - so I suggested he write a story about Whaleman Arch and Cyra and gave him a few suggested stories. He had NOT read with of the original stories.

Conrad´s version is now on my stories page. Read it - if you dare.

The original story can be found at John´s old blog.

Chapter one can be found at chapter-1-today-it-rained-blood-part.html

Chapter two is at chapter-1-b.html

And my version of both those chapters can be found at: http://whalemanarch.blogspot.com/

And Conrad´s even wierder version is on my story page.

So now you all know.

Happy Easter all!

C&C3 VS SupCom

Well - the post you´ve all been waiting for...

My verdict about which is better - Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars or Supreme Commander.

Well - firstly - the box.

The collector´s edition of SupCom comes in a tin box with LOADS of extras. 3 posters, 3 faction cards, a badge, an extra DVD, a galaxy map, and the game itself.

On the other hand - C&C3: Kane Edition comes in a standard DVD case with the DVD disc, an extra CD, and a thin manual. That´s it.

So it definatly loses out in the extras race.

But as far as the game play?

Well - C&C plays very nicely on my machine - while SupCom staggers once you get a couple of units running around.
My system isnt exactly very flash anymore - and it freezes every now and then (not due to either game) but C&C definatly plays better.

Both games suffer from the sort of graphics that can make battles too confused to have any idea what´s happening. Once the rockets and explosions start - you cant really see much until it clears and you see who survived. That annoys me a bit.

And SupCom has the extrememly awesome zoom facility. It´s incredibly usefull - and I expect most future RTS games will include it. Finally we can get away from the aweful too close zoom level of some games - such as Warcraft 3.

The story?

Well - I havent gotten all that far in either yet - but I think it´s safe to say that C&C has that one in the bag too. The SupCom one seems much better than it´s predecessor TA - but it´s not really a story driven game.
C&C has a long history of fun and deep stories (for an RTS anyway). And this one looks like improving on that.

Movies.

Both games have cutscenes between movies. And they are NOT the stupid sort of ingame movies that Warcraft 3 and Generals and many other games make us suffer through.

In Supcom the movies are computer generated and quite awesome.

C&C continues the famous legacy of using real actors and video in their movies.

And it works well - so I´d definatly saying C&C´s movies are better. Even if they are a little corny.

And hey - they have actors from shows like BattleStar Galactica (new), LOST, House, and Lando from Star Wars. That´d be an impressive cast list for any movie or show - let alone a computer game!

The C&C series has always known how to do good cutscenes. And that´s one thing I´ve always supported them for. The only other game that seems to do good cutscenes was the Wing Commander series.

Anyway - these are both excellent games - and I´m happy to own them. Even if it did set me back about $200 all up. I own the collectors editions - so I´m happy.

But if you asked me - I wouldn´t hesitate to say that C&C3 is my favorite of the two.

Shame about the lack of a box though...

Speakers are finally working

Thanks Mark!

I finally have some decent sound in Devonport.

It´s been almost two months - and no decent speakers.

My cool computer speakers (that I bought from Nifen) kept blowing fuses for no apparent reason.

I gave them to my mate Mark (electrician) to see what was wrong with them - and he couldnt find anything - but he put a bigger fuse in them - and now I at least have sound.

Even though I still dont know what was wrong in the first place.

In other news - Command and Conquer 3 rocks. I´ll post about that soon.

But instead of playing the game tonight - I was messing around with my lego (shock horror!)

I´ve been checking my sets again - trying to see what parts I´m missing. I bought some of my missing pieces on ebay now - but I´m still missing some. I´ll need to update my Most Wanted page now.
