On Saturday I went to an engagement party. I think it's probably the first one since Ben and Bec's - which is years ago.

Alex and Adele (the couple in the boat) are members of D.O.R.K.S. - which I have started attending pretty much every week.

I used to go to school with Adele and Tim (her brother). It's been great going to D.O.R.K.S. and getting to know people from Geneva (school) again.

And being Tasmainans - when it started raining, we went swimming. Well - not everyone - Adele and Alex were too busy doing engagement party stuff - but the rest of us D.O.R.K.S. headed to the pool. Very nice place to have an engagement party - the house had a decent little pool. The photo was taken after most people had given up - and the secret wall had been slide back in place to hide the pool again.

So thanks for the invite Alex and Adele - and all the best for the future!

I'm Back!

Finally – my website is back.

It’s amazing how often you want to blog when you can’t.

Anyway – brief recap.

Nearly 2 weeks ago – my website stopped responding. I wasn’t sure why – but eventually discovered that my host (www.worldgenhosting.net) had gone down too. That wasn’t a good sign.

I couldn’t email them – because their domains were down (including email) but thankfully I did have a direct email to a guy called Wes who happens to pretty much own WorldGen. Very glad I had that.

After much trying – I eventually managed to get some info out of Wes. Turns out they were upgrading their server, and it screwed up, so they lost everything. Very nasty. I shudder to think what their other customers would be saying – especially if they are running businesses from the websites.

Anyway – Wes was able to get my files back – which was a start. Unfourtuantly they only recovered a very small portion of my databases. This meant I’d lost all my Blog posts, comments, etc since my last backup (about a year ago). True – I should back it up more often – but I sort of figured that my host would have backups.

Even more annoying – SiteB was gone entirely. Most of you don’t know what Site B is yet but it’s a project that I’d been working on – and entered a LOT of data into. And it was gone!

But today Wes managed to work some magic – and my databases have returned.

There are still issues with my other websites – but hopefully they’ll be sorted as time goes on.

I’ll defiantly be backing up my databases more often.

In other news – I went to visit my sister for her birthday, Klutz can to visit me because he could, I went to see Death Race with some guys from DORKS (plus Klutz), my parents bought a new PC, and I finally got a copy of Red Alert 3.

RA3 is brilliant. As other people have said – with this game, who needs sleep?

Sadly – I do. Especially after staying up late with Klutz last night.

So that’ll do for now. Expect more regular posting to return in the coming days.

New Glasses in 3D

New new glasses have turned up - again.

This time they are at least the correct perscription.

Last time they got the main glasses wrong - but the free pair was correct. Using the free pair I could see very clearly - but it felt like the world was in 2D.

They weakened the strength in this new pair - so I can't see as clearly (it's still a lot better than my old pair) but at least the world's in 3D again.

I might be a fan of old 2D platformers, but I wouldn't want to live in one.

Very Dodgey DVD Stopper Thing...

Well - decided to do a little more building today. Extremely shoddy work - but it was more to prove an idea than actually build something usefull (well, that's what I decided after I started and realised how shoddy it was going to be anyway).

My DVD shelves have an annoying habbit of being rather deep. Thats good if you want to keep two rows of dvds on one shelf - but not so good if you dont. You end up with DVDs being pushed too far back, falling over, and getting lost for the next few years.

So I wanted to build a stopper that would well, stop that from happening.

So a couple of minutes with my circular saw, a pen that doesn't work, and no measuring tape, table, clamps etc I ended up with these. It was only scrap bits of mdf - so I didn't waste anything.

And it works quite well - apart from looking extremely dodgey (which you don't see when the DVDs are there anyway).

They arn't as obviously shoddy in the pictures as I thought it might be - but the cuts are all over the place, and the joins are as straight as a corner etc.

Dr Horrible and RA3

I should have posted about this earlier - but I havent - so I am now.

I'm not a big fan of most musicals. In fact - most musicals are enough to make me leave the room - but there are a few I like. Things like Phantom of the Opera, Joseph, and the Pirates of Penzance (Jon English version) are pretty good.

But I have now found a musical that is FANTASTIC!

It's called Dr Horrible - and it's produced by Joss Whedon.

Need I say more?

For those with leaky brains - Joss Whedon is the guy responcible for Serenity and Firefly (my favorite movie and TV series).

During the Writers Strike in America, Joss didn't have any work - so he and his family and friends got together to make a musical for the internet. Basically as a way of shoving it to the studieos (who weren't giving the writers a raise) and proving that you can be successfull without the studieos help.

It's a story of a guy who wants to become a super-villian (who is NOT from Maclom in the Middle), the girl from the laundry that he has a crush on, and a hero called Captain Hammer who is extremely up himself (like Superman and most heros really).

The bad guy is the good guy and the good guy is the bad guy etc.

It's designed to be a blog. Sort of like the people who video blog on Youtube. Dr Horrible is blogging about his attempts to join the Evil League of Evil.

It's highly funny - with some fantastic songs that I still haven't stopped singing.

It's not out on DVD yet, but you can buy it on iTunes (if you're not totally opposed to iTunes) or watch it on youtube or get it via bittorent etc.

As soon as it comes out on DVD, I'm buying it.

It's some of the best stuff I've seen for years.

If I havent already forced you to watch it (like a lot of my firends) I highly recommend it.

In other news - I've been watching/reading a lot about Red Alert 3 lately (it's due out next month!) and it's looking really good.

Except for one thing.

Copy Protection.

Now - while copy protection itself is understandable - this sort isn't.

When you install it, it registers with a website to make sure it's legal. That's annoying and evil etc - but I could put up with it if I had to. By the way - I'm going to buy it - so my copy will be legal - I'm not complaining because I want to pirate it.

The big problem is that it will only let you install it 5 times. After that - you'll have to ring EA to get more licenses activated.

I install and uninstall games a lot - so this will get stupidly annoying.

And the bigger question - what happens in ten years time when I want to install it? Will they still be supporting it?

One of the EA reps said something like "in ten years time hopefully Red Alert 4 will be out so you won't need to play it anymore" which is insane! I still play Dune 2, regardless of the 3 or 4 games that have followed it. I still play Command and Conquer (original) even though it's had 7 or so sequels.

The even more stupid thing is that Spore (which I haven't played) had the same sort of copy protection. Fat lot of good it did them - within a week it was cracked and you could download a version that didn't need to register.

Spore was massivly pirated - partly by people who decided not to buy it just because of the protection.

So RA3 will be cracked quickly too (probably before it's even for sale in Aus) and people will pirate it.

I'm going to buy it - I've already reserved my copy of the Premier Edition. I like owning my games, and I want to encourage them to make decent games. But I'm almost certainly going to pirate it too sometime, so I'll have a copy that will keep working in 10 years time.

And if I wasn't such a huge fan of the Command and Conquer series, I'd be joining the ranks of people boy-cotting the game and pirating it instead of buying it.

Stupid move EA.
