End-of-Year Axon LANjawaproTue 09/12/2008 02:39 PM
This Saturday was the big Axon for this year. They called it Uber2gasm - continuing their list of stupid LAN names. (Ubergasm was the end of year LAN last year)
It also happened to be on while my Turkey and his mates (Team NoSpoon) were up - so we all headed into Launceston on Saturday. About 2 hours later on Saturday than we should have done - because it took these guys ages to pack their gear up. I was actually the first one ready - that’s insane!
On the way to Launceston, Benny got some sleep ready for the LAN.
The LAN itself was pretty awesome. Just a whisker under 70 people turned up with at least 80 computers (probably more).
It was actually one of the better Axons as far as network reliability.
Turks and Team NoSpoon had never been to a large LAN before - and couldn’t believe the Leeching to be had.
As always, MartianLeader and his crew joined me in a couple of games of Savage and Flatout2, and Cod4. Brilliant all.
Axon had three competitions this LAN, Red Alert 3, Cod4, and CS:S. Unfortunately, they did CS:S first - which was the only one I didn’t want to join in. Team NoSpoon actually like CS:S though (freaks) and asked me to join them for the comp. I did - and we sucked.
We were up against team Raiders - which consisted of most of my friends from the Martianleader LANs - lead by Raider-of-Days, Henry. They thrashed us, and went on to be thrashed by the next team. We wouldn’t have had a chance.
I was dying to play in the RA3 comp - but we had to pull out before it happened. We had to go back to Devonport for the night, and then back to Launceston in time for church - and we were tired before we started (except Benny, who’d had the extra sleep).
So pretty much the earliest I’ve ever left an Axon, we packed up and were ready to leave - everyone except James (Noobjuice).
After the rest of us were packed, James was still trying to download 300G to his 150G hard-drive. We eventually convinced him that this would never work (eventually) and sadly left.
Turkey, Benny, James, and Ziltoid all said they want to come back for the next one if they have the chance.
Long live Axon - you’ve got 4 more fans!

Team NoSpoonjawaproTue 09/12/2008 12:36 PM
Well - the half-week LAN is over, and the Hobartians have all gone home.
But I figured I’d introduce you to the guys from Team NoSpoon.
NoSpoon are a clan from Hobart. Their name hails from the fact that CS players regulary have something like NoSpeakers after their player name to inform people that they are at a disadvantage. The NoSpoon crew decided to spoof this and put NoSpoon after their name, and thus the clan was born.
I’ve been officially a part of the clan for a while now - but as it’s a clan that has never really played a proper game online together, I’ve never participated.
It would help if they played something else than CS (I get really sick of that game).
Anyway - here are the NoSpoon members who have been living in my house for the last few days. I got them to do a little survey thing:
First Name: Martin
Nickname/Callsign: turkeybrain
Name of your Computer: BERTHA
Favorite Operating System: Gentoo Linux
Number of working computers you own: 3 I can think of at the moment, but I imagine I've got some somewhere I've forgotten about.
Number of above that are Macs: 0. Although I do have somebody else's ancient mac laptop in my room at home.
Favorite Game of all time: Somewhere between Commander Keen, Captain Comic, and Castle of the Winds. Left 4 Dead is probably my current favourite though.
Favorite Left 4 Dead character: Bill. (And the Tank)
Which is more fun - Air Hockey or Xbox: I haven't been doing much work on the XBox, and seeing it's a Microsoft thing, well, um, Air Hockey!
What flavor topping do you like in Milkshakes? The traditional strawberry and chocolate. Though I'm happy to experiment.
Have you registered for Axon yet? Yes
Free reign to say whatever you want to finish off the interview: You're cat is still stupid. Not in a bad way, just a funny way. Have you submitted any photos of him to LOLCats yet?
First Name: Marty
Nickname/Callsign: Ziltoid
Name of your Computer: ZEUS
Favorite Operating System: Ubuntu (when it works)
Number of working computers you own: 2
Number of above that are Macs: 0 (my parents have 2)
Favorite Game of all time: Unreal Tournament GOTY
Favorite Left 4 Dead character: Francis
Which is more fun - Air Hockey or Xbox: Xbox
What flavor topping do you like in Milkshakes? Chocolate
Have you registered for Axon yet? not just yet but i will be in 3 mins
Free reign to say whatever you want to finish off the interview: I hate vans!
First Name: Benny
Nickname/Callsign: verbos3
Name of your Computer: The one I'm using: Optimus (Note - Benny was using Klut'z PC while he was at my place). The one I brang: fiendfyre.
Favorite Operating System: Is this a trick question? OSX, of course.
Number of working computers you own: Computers that are personally mine? 2.
Number of above that are Macs: 0 (This was later proven to be a complete lie - but Benny was too ashamed to admit he owned Macs, and he's a Mac fan!)
Favorite Game of all time: Counter Strike: Source.
Favorite Left 4 Dead character: Zoey
Which is more fun - Air Hockey or Xbox: Xbox, fo' sure.
What flavor topping do you like in Milkshakes? Strawberry.
Have you registered for Axon yet? Indeed I have, sir.
Free reign to say whatever you want to finish off the interview: Mac's aren't that bad, you know. Thanks for letting us use your house.
Ok, after much delay, heres my part to the survey:
First Name: James
Nickname/Callsign: Noobjuice (and now 300)
Name of your Computer: Romulus
Favorite Operating System: Windows (Don't burn me for this, its got a monopoly as far as gamings concerned)
Number of working computers you own: 1 (Hopefully I'll have 2 when i go to NZ, when Marties former laptop gets fixed*)
Number of above that are Macs: 0
Favorite Game of all time: where to start ... Warcraft III, Unreal Tournament GOTY, Left 4 dead, and Portal (cant decide between them)
Favorite Left 4 Dead character: Louis
Which is more fun - Air Hockey or Xbox: X-box (cant beat lego starwars)
What flavor topping do you like in Milkshakes? strawberry
Have you registered for Axon yet?: ...yeah (James took days to get around to filling this in - and Axon had been and gone before he did)
Free reign to say whatever you want to finish off the interview: *ok, for those that didn't know, i bought Ziltoids laptop from him a couple of months back, but unannounced to me Satelite L20's have a real issue with overheating, and about 2 weeks later it just died, wouldnt do anything past turning on the cooling fan. but its ok, cos my dad knows some people in NZ who can fix it, or failing that they have a bunch of Tetra somthing-a-ratheres kicking around that are pretty much the same system. so fingers crossed...
Jame’s main claim to fame is trying to download 300G to a 150G hard-drive, causing Rob’s PC to bluescreen while he was using it, and taking half a week longer to respond to this interview than anyone else - thus holding up Rob’s blogging of this post...

Hurry Up James...jawaproTue 09/12/2008 09:22 AM
I have 2 posts ready to roll about the end of the half-week LAN at my place - but I'm still waiting for James to contribute his part.
In other news - half the lights at work are out due to the electricians - so I'm sitting in the semi dark using a computer - it feels like a LAN...
Just not as much fun.

Internet CensorshipjawaproFri 05/12/2008 08:58 AM
Most of you have probably already heard of this (havent had a chance to blog about it before) - but the Australian governmen has plans to censor our internet.
They want to enforce manditory filtering at the ISP level (before it gets to you) to block out 'nasty' stuff.
I don't use the 'nasty' stuff - but I am still very opposed to this. The idea is that the government maintains a blacklist of things that should be censored. This means they can add anything they like - and some groups are already asking for more and more stuff to be included. Perfectly legal stuff too.
Places like China have government control over the internet - but a country like Australia shouldn't! We're not communists!
The government can add anything they want - including people who disagree with them. Things like this post!
Now - that's a very bad start - but it gets worse. The filtering doesnt work properly. It'll let some bad stuff through - and block a lot of good stuff by accident. AND it's so intensive that it could slow the internet down by 80%.
So we'd get government censored interenet that's far slower and rather dodgey at the best of times.
The filters also don't work on P2P stuff - so if you are into the 'nasty' stuff, you'll still be able to get it.
Along wih ISPs, the IT industry, and a load of other groups (including the Children Welfare groups that this is supposed to be for) are kicking up a fuss.
That's why I've added the ad on the left of the screen.
So sign the petition - or do something else to help defeat this stupid idea. Save the internet!

LAN update...jawaproFri 05/12/2008 08:44 AM
Sorry for not updating earlier - but I've been having too much fun.
The original plan was for Turkey and 4 of his mates to come up and spend a week LANing at my place. The 4 mates turned into 3, and the week turned into half a week - but apart from that things have gone according to plan.
They arrived on Wednesday - did some shopping - and probably haven't been outside since.
My house is pretty crowded with 5 people and 8 computers (running) but its been heaps of fun.
Because Turks has been here before - he said he knew not to trust my cupboards, so they went shopping and bought enough food for the half-week. The upside of this is that I've had a cooked tea provided each night - which has been pretty nice.
Anyway - I have to go to work now. I work and they play - just doesn't seem fair :(
