The end of things...

Summer is over! And it's about time!

Last night was actually cold! I was in heaven! Bring on the coolness!

In other news, Summer went out with a bang. Not only do I hate it, it hates me. Threw in an electrical storm on Friday night. The lightning was very close, and it fried my awesome cisco adsl router. Just what I didn't need when I was saving up for a UHF! I haven't managed to scrounge a working router (thanks Tim, but yours wont work) so I'm off to buy one tomorrow I guess. Doh!

Thankfully I have a work laptop with a next-g connection now. Won't go completely crazy. Its amazing how odd it feels when you lose your connection. I can go camping and not care - but when I'm at home it feels wrong if it's not there.

---- UPDATE ---

Turns out I was a little hastly in bagging Tim's modem. After working out some issues related to static IPs, I finally got it going - so I'm back on the net. I still need to get a modem - but it's not so urgent.

Save the Krogans....

I have finally finished Mass Effect 2!

The end was truely epic, as you'd expect from a game like this. None of my crew died (which isn't always the case) so I'm happy.

Still couldn't cure the damn genophage though. Save the Krogans! That's my cry.

With an army of Krogans at my side, defeating the Reapers would be easy...

Ah well - there's always Mass Effect 3...

Still, I can finally get on with life now that it's over. No longer using every free minute to play the game. At least until C&C4 comes out in March...

Bicheno Camping

I spent a very enjoyable weekend camping with the family (plus Klutz) on a beach north of Bicheno. I may prefer the West coast to the East, but it was very nice.

It was too warm though - I think camping in winter sounds like more fun. Even today is nicer, it's raining, but at least it's cool!

Regardless of the heat, it was still a lot of fun.

Is Avatar this generation’s Star Wars?

I overheard a conversation at work the other day where someone asked if they thought Avatar was this generation’s Star Wars - and most of the room agreed with them.

I sure hope not - but it’s an interesting question.

Avatar, like Star Wars, has a lot of people interested who wouldn’t normally be interested in science fiction. Both mix fantasy and Sci Fi. Both are great visually and have fantastic special effects for their time.

But....

Avatar just wasn’t a very good movie. It’s a very well done lame movie. Star Wars might not have been very well acted, but it was a cool story and had twists that shocked the world (I am your father!). Avatar's only twist could be guessed from the poster, let alone a trailer!

Personally I think that Avatar is more like this decade’s Matrix. It’s an odd movie that’s so good with effects that everyone will watch it - but most people will forget about it after a few years.

Does anyone truly think that in 25 years time Avatar will still be a killer franchise? Will Avatar spawn a universe of games, books, comics, and collectibles that will still be going strong? Will you be able to impress your kids by saying you went to see it when it was new? Will anyone’s kids still dream of being a blue freaky alien in 20 years? Does anyone dream of that now? Now just how many lightsabres and X-wings are sold each month 25 years after Star Wars?

So my view is pretty clear. What do you guys think?

Collectors Editions

Just thought I'd take a moment to discuss Collectors Editions.

I bought Mass Effect 2 the day it came out - I'd preordered the collectors edition. It's not a bad pack, with a bonus features DVD, an art book, and some bonus in game stuff.

Collectors editions are normally like this - a way to milk an extra $20 or so out of someone who was already going to buy the game.

However, then I found out about Bioshock 2's Collector's edition. I've heard both good and bad things about Bioshock, but I still haven't played it. I did buy a copy for $5 off steam a while back, but I havent even loaded it.

Normally I wouldn't have even considered the sequel - but this is a very cool collectors pack.

It comes with posters, an art book, a CD of the music - AND...

A Vinyl LP of the soundtrack of Bioshock 1!

It's a blooming record!

How awesome is that? Full points to the person who decided to throw that in.

Almost enought to make me consider it...

Except, I'm too busy playing Mass Effect 2....
