Is Avatar this generation’s Star Wars?

I overheard a conversation at work the other day where someone asked if they thought Avatar was this generation’s Star Wars - and most of the room agreed with them.

I sure hope not - but it’s an interesting question.

Avatar, like Star Wars, has a lot of people interested who wouldn’t normally be interested in science fiction. Both mix fantasy and Sci Fi. Both are great visually and have fantastic special effects for their time.

But....

Avatar just wasn’t a very good movie. It’s a very well done lame movie. Star Wars might not have been very well acted, but it was a cool story and had twists that shocked the world (I am your father!). Avatar's only twist could be guessed from the poster, let alone a trailer!

Personally I think that Avatar is more like this decade’s Matrix. It’s an odd movie that’s so good with effects that everyone will watch it - but most people will forget about it after a few years.

Does anyone truly think that in 25 years time Avatar will still be a killer franchise? Will Avatar spawn a universe of games, books, comics, and collectibles that will still be going strong? Will you be able to impress your kids by saying you went to see it when it was new? Will anyone’s kids still dream of being a blue freaky alien in 20 years? Does anyone dream of that now? Now just how many lightsabres and X-wings are sold each month 25 years after Star Wars?

So my view is pretty clear. What do you guys think?

Agreed.  It was a good movie, but I doubt it will still be a thriving universe 25 years later.

And now for the philosophical take.

The above link is a take on the Avatar worldview.  How come all Hollywood future films portray a pretty dim view of the world as it 'evolves'.  They acknowldege the hoplessness and sinfulness of man in thier product without even knowing why.

Well it might be a good that Hollywood is recognising "the hopelessness an sinfulness of man", but I don't reckon you can eke 6 movies, a bazillion books and spinoff series as well as a line of toys and household items out of this 1 movie. And I'm guessing they wrapped things up fairly well, so there's not much chance for a lot of development. I think the closest they're going to get to a saga is this prequel novel that Cameron's writing.
