I had a pretty sweet weekend this week.

First up Nifen (Tommy) came to my place on Friday night for a small LAN. Really good - as I haven’t really caught up with him much since he came back from Europe. Seen him at Axons - but that’s about it.

Lots of Red Alert!

And then on Saturday arvo, I went through to Launceston to a Model Railway Expo.

I used to love going to RailEx - but they haven’t had it for the last 2 years (not sure why) but this expo seems to have taken it’s place. A lot of layouts I’ve seen at RailEx were back for this one.

If you’re into trains or thinking about taking the hobby up - this is a great place to go to see the different scales and types of layouts. I still think HO scale looks the best - but N and even Z scales have a lot to offer - largely because they’re smaller and you can fit a lot more in a smaller area.

The busiest layout there...

The most unique layout - this is a Z scale train - on a record player! The record was spinning - and the train was traveling in the opposite direction and maintaining it’s ground.

I must confess, when I took the picture, the train had been slowed down and was pushing against the buffer at the rear - but I did see it spinning at the correct speed at the front of the record.

A HO scale layout. Much simpler and less crowded than some of the others - and looks much better for it. (no offense to the other bloke’s layout - it’s very well done and detailed - there’s just too much to it for my tastes).

And then there was this guy. His layout was all Lego.

While it doesn’t look as good as the traditional model railroads - I was very taken by it. Probably because I’m so excited by Lego at the moment.

The guy in question used to work for the Tasmanian Railway - and had built models of a lot of engines he remembered from when he was working there. (yes, I know this one wasn’t on the rails when I took the photo).

His models aren’t as detailed as the other exhibitors - but there’s a lot of skill getting detail into models made from Lego bricks.

Not sure if the other exhibitors take him seriously though.

I still love my model railroads - but I think I’ll stick to my Lego for the time being. It’s slightly cheaper - and works better when you don’t have enough space for a layout.

Three Monitors

Check it out - I've got three monitors now!

Two are directly attached to my PC, while the third is actually plugged into my server, but due to an awesome app call Synergy (thanks for the heads-up Klutz!) it works as an extension of my desktop too. So not only can I have different windows in all three monitors - I actually have 2 seperate processers to call upon - so the server can be doing something entirely different to the main system.

Pretty sweet eh?

Magazine Friday

Yesterday seems to have been Magazine Friday.

First up I got a call from Nerd Central (geek comic shop in Devonport) to say that my BrickJournal and Stargate magazines had arrived. I'd pick them up that evening.

Then I went to the post office and discovered that my first ever Lego Club magazine had arrived for me there.

There's been a lego club in Australia for a while now - but it's always looked very kiddish, so I've never bothered. I talked to Mike (he's a member) and he told me that they send the Lego Catalouges to club members. That was all it took - I've collected the catelouges for years (have one a year from 1970 to the present). Lately it's been harder, as Lego has been putting out more than one catalouge a year, and the local shops dont seem to get them.

So I signed up for the Lego club - cost me $15 as a once-off, and they send me magazines about 4 times a year or something.

Well - as expected, the actuall magazine was pointless kid stuff - but the catalouge was awesome (as always). Check out the new Space Police sets!

Anyway - I  went to Nerd Central and collected the other two. I finally got the next issue of BrickJournal. That's also a lego magazine - but it's an AFOL mag (AFOL = Adult Fan of Lego). These are the people who spend six years working on a lego model :)

The other magazine is the StarGate one. I've got a straight run of that too - since it came out. All nicely kept in a couple of folders. Might eventually be worth something. This one is more interesting than normal because it's got info on the new Stargate series - Stargate Universe.

Anyway - so that's my Friday haul of magazines. I've got some reading to do...

Terminator Salvation

Wow!

I just got back from watching Terminator Salvation.

Wow…

After T3, a lot of people (including me) thought the franchise was pretty much dead. T4 fixed that.

It’s a great movie – telling a good story that feels like it belongs in the universe while still throwing up a lot of surprises.

It focuses on John Conner and a half-human-half-terminator called Markus. Unfortunately the trailers gave that away – so no one would be surprised when Markus is finally revealed to be a machine. That’s sad, as it could have worked well otherwise.

There’s a lot of action – and it’s well done too. The humans are a little more organized than I’d gathered from the other Terminator movies – but hey, we won the war – so we must have been fairly organized (for those who don’t remember, the humans won, which is why Skynet sent the terminators back in time to kill John Conner (or his mother)).

There was an “I’ll be back” – but it was done very well. It wasn’t over the top or corny (like T3) but actually fitted. In fact, you could easily have missed it.

And there was a big surprise (albeit a very welcome one). Arnie comes back! If you haven’t seen it – sorry for spoiling it, but I bet everyone will hear about it shortly anyway. It’s only a small cameo – but it’s good. It’s CG by the way – but good CG.

It's definatly a movie you should watch after watching the others (maybe skip T3) as some of the story wouldnt make much sense otherwise. As long as you half remember the original movies, this one should make sense.

But there was something else...

There was a very hard hitting moment in the movie.

The sort of moment that hits you in the gut and leaves you reeling.

That sort of moment is rare in movies (Serenity had 2 of them! – Star Trek had one when SPOILER 1 was blown up).

In T4, it's after the actual movie – but before the credits.

The movie was dedicated to the memory of Stan Winston.

I hadn’t even heard he was dead.

If Spielberg or Lucas or James Cameron had died it would have been about the same. Stan was a legend. If he worked on a movie – you could be sure it’d be good (effects wise at least).

Stan was the creature guy. He’d do the animatronics for robots and dinosaurs and aliens and just about anything. And they do look better when they’re actually on set. And no one could do them better.

We’ll miss you Stan – the creatures will never be the same again….
