The Danger of Roads and Auctions

It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to. - Bilbo Baggns.

Bilbo was true about roads and wandering, but auctions are a dangerous business too. They are great fun, and I love them - but if you're not carefull you can end up coming home with a heap of useless chairs, a couple of desks, and not 1 - but 2 pointless printers.

Yes - I had fun on Saturday at an Auction...

TV Channels - I have a new ONE.

Well - sports nuts can rejoice - Tassie has finally got access to ONE, the new 24 hour HD sports channel.

Now there's even more pointless stuff to watch on free TV, and less reason for anyone to get PayTV.

Being a non-sports nut, I'm not overly excited. There's some extra motorsport which will be good - but otherwise it'll probably just be junk.

Originally Tassie was supposed to get ONE when the rest of the country did - but they forgot about us. Then they were supposed to do it at the start of the month - but they ran out of cheeseburgers and put the project on hold.

Finally it went live last night. According to official sources on the net, you don't need to retune or anything - but that appears to be another lie. I had to rescan my LCD TV before it could pick ONE up.

Anyway - I just thought I'd post it here in case people didn't know about it yet. After the publicity of the two failed attempts - they seem to have kept this one quiet in case something went wrong again.

By the way - if you can't pick up HD stations - you're screwed :(

In a move that would be considered low even by French standards - Team Vodaphone (team Tripple-8) have announced that they are switching from Ford to Holden next year.

The bogans in charge of Holden have gotten sick of losing - and decided that they only way they can change that is to buy better drivers. Sadly, Whincup and Lowndes aren’t strong-willed enough to resist the offer Holden waved at them.

If they keep losing - are they going to start buying Fords and painting them as Holdens?

Just another example of the low tactics Holden employ.

So - a sad day for Motor-sport fans, unless you happen to be a Holden-loving bogan.

Axon again...

Every couple of months I post about the latest Axon LAN I've been too - and it's probably getting a little less interesting now - but I've just been to another one and really enjoyed it - so here's the post.

It was extremely well run this time - and we actually got 3 of the competitions out of the way the right side of midnight!

The first comp was Red Alert 3 - but sadly Nifen infantry rushed me, so I didn't last long. Still heaps of fun.

The second comp was Live For Speed - but I didn't bother. Never played it, so I'd have gotten pwned pretty seriously - and I was having heaps of fun playing DOTA and L4D with the Bishopsburne guys (and Nifen and Klutz).

The third comp was UT:GOTY! That's a classic PC game from 1999 - but is still heaps of fun. It was teams of 3 againts 3 - and once upon a time I would have done quite well, but I was pretty rusty and teamed up with equally rusty Martian Leader and Klutz - so we got trounced pretty quickly.

The comps were brilliant though - even if I sucked. Top marks to the Axon Admins.

^ Troglodyte Geeks like the dark...

There were a couple of power issues (happens when you try running that many PCs at once) but it wasn't too bad - except for one poor guy who's Acer monitor blew up when the power came back on. There was a loud unhealthy bang and fizz, and smoke crept out the top. So long monitor...

Someone else bought this classic laptop along too. I didn't look too hard, but it was probably a 386 era laptop - and was running a dos prompt. It also had the dubious honour of being the only monitor smaller than Klutz's desktop :)

All in all - one of the better Axons I've been too.

The Mass Effect Effect

Ok - as promised a week ago - here’s why I haven’t been posting.

It’s due to a game called Mass Effect.

Tom/Nifen gave it to me for my birthday (thanks mate!) and I installed it about a week and a half ago.

Since then, I’ve done very little except for play it (and work of course). I took last Saturday off to go to watch the Hellyer Rally - but ended up playing it late into the night afterwards anyway.

If you were designing an addictive drug especially for me - this would be pretty close.

It’s a good game. It’s a role-playing game by Bioware - so it was always going to be good. It’s not without it’s problems - but it was great fun all the same. If you're going to give it a go - just be warned that you might be unable to stop for the next week or so. It's the Mass Effect Effect.

The good news is that I’ve finished it now, so I can get back to actually living again now. First thing I had to do was fix my computer so it could actually get on the net again (yes, I’d been so hooked I hadn’t even bothered trying to fix it!). Turns out Zone-alarms had gone spak, but I’ve gotten rid of it now. Just in time for Axon!
