Turks suggested I post about my current car hunting - so here goes.
I want a 4x4. I’ve wanted one since, well, probably since I was about 5. I always used to say that my first car would be a 4x4, but when that time came, I went with a more practical choice.
I always planned to get a 4x4 as a second car when I got a job - and that’s still the plan. When I was looking at houses to buy (and even rent) I was very keen to get somewhere that had room for a second vehicle.
So now I’m looking pretty seriously for a fairly cheap 4x4. Currently all the most likely candidates are Pajeros - and there are currently 2 that I’m considering very seriously.
The white on is in Melbourne, and currently unregistered. That’s not a big deal though. I love the way it looks, although it’d need a bulbar. The engine is only a 2.6 petrol, and has had some performance work done to it.
In the other corner we have a blue-greenish Pajero with silver trim. This one is in Launceston. It costs more, has done more ks (by about 100,000), but has had a lot of work done on the engine, which is a 3ltr V6 Petrol. It also has a slightly better interior.
It also comes with an ugly bulbar and roof rack. Although both would be quite useful, I’d want to replace them with something less ugly eventually. Or maybe they’d grow on me.
All this is what I can gleam without having looked at the cars myself. Dad’s going to check the one in Launceston for me tonight.
So that’s where I’m at. If it wasn’t for the more powerful and reconditioned engine in the bluegreen one - I’d prefer the white one. Now I’m torn.
I’m not in a hurry though. Although I would be happy to buy one today, there’s no real reason to rush. If I can talk Dad into it, I’d prefer to take him to Melbourne so we can check both out before making a call - but we’ll see.

Dad has had a look at the Green one, and is quite impressed by it.
The more we look into the white one, the more it makes the green one seem like the better deal. The white one seems to have been resprayed and some panels are probably replacements etc. Looking good for the green one so far - but we'll see.

I finally found it!
Years ago, there was an ad on TV that I loved. Why? Well - it had a great car, some great camera work, a great song, and a very memorable tag line.
It was the Mitsubishi Pajero ad that we called the 'I wish I could sing like that' ad. It used to come on all the time - but somehow I never managed to record it (back in the VHS days).
I have tried to find a copy on the net quite a few times over the years since. I even went as far as to contact Mitsubishi - but no one could find me a copy.
I did learn that the song is called 'Rush' by Big Audio Dynamite - and that the song actually includes the ‘I wish I could sing like that’ part.
Anyway - as I am currently seriously thinking about buying myself a Pajero (although an earlier model than in this ad) I decided to take another look - and this time I finally found something!

Covered in dust and seriously sun-burnt. Ah - what a good way to spend a Saturday!
Zeke and I went to Bakers Beach to watch Tim compete in a hillclimb. Heaps of fun - I just wish someone could have blown up the sun beforehand or I could have remembered to bring a hat. Either would have done.
Zeke probably wishes he hadn’t decided to sit on a bullants nest - but we all have regrets I guess.
Except maybe Tim, who had a great time. He set all 4 fastest runs (he only did 4) so that’s impressive. He was competing against 2 wheel drives, but still - he was quite a lot faster than the closest rivals.
In other news, Zeke (who previously claimed that Holden is his favorite car manufactorer) learnt that Commodore was not a Japanese car brand, but actually made by Holden. You learn something new every day I guess. Try saying Commodore in a Japanese accent - it’s funny, especially when you’re annoying Zeke with it.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go and clean the dust off my camera and tripod.

Melbourne - Star Wars Expo etcjawaproMon 19/10/2009 09:47 PM
Well - I’m back!
I was in Melbourne for a couple of days last week for work - and decided to stay for Saturday. There was a Star Wars exhibition at the Scienceworks museum in Melbourne - and Mike and I had been planning to go for a while (although Mike had already been once).
So after a couple of rather hectic days with work, I left most of my gear at the office, repacked into my little backpack, and caught the train to Traralgon (about 2 hours out of Melbourne - where Mike lives) on Friday night.
As those who know me would agree - I’ve never really got the hang of packing light. This was a pretty good effort on my part I think - but I must admit, it got jolly heavy by the end of Saturday.
After our trip around Europe, the thing I most wished I’d had with me was a tripod. So this time I decided I’d take it. Unfortunately the museum wouldn’t let me take it in, in case I used it to break the glass and try and steal Han Solo’s boots (I think Aunty Bec tried). That was a drag - and my photos weren’t as good as they should have been.
The exhibit was a mix of props and costumes from the movie and other sciency things that sort of related.
For example - after looking at Luke’s Landspeeder, you got to play with Mag-Lev trains.
You built models out of Lego (with strong magnets glued in) and had to create a design that would work on their Mag Lev setup. It sort of fits with the Landspeeder as they both hover (Landspeeders use repulsorlifts - not Magnetic Levitation), but it was fun - and hey, it was Lego!

The Tantive IV - one of my favorite ships ever. I love the design. Correllian craftsmanship - awesome!
Tantive IV. I suppose it’s really the Tantive 4, but I’ve always thought of it as the Tantive Eye-Vee.
They hired a wookie to guard Solo’s boots. I think they took Bec’s threats pretty seriously. According to her, they are the best boots ever!
It was quite fun - and worth the early trip back into Melbourne.
It turns out that there was a comic/scifi convention in Melbourne - but I didn’t have time to get there. Really sad - as it would have been a great way to wrap off the day. There were even some Atlantis stars in town - darn, if only I’d known in advance, I’d have worked out a way to do both.
Still - I had a heap of fun and can’t complain. Mike and I wandered around Melbourne for a while instead. I spent a heap of money at Minotaur (geek heaven), he spent his at EB (also a great shop), and we had a poke around in some other shops.
Meyers in Melbourne has a great Lego area. They have a better rang than most shops down here, but they also have some impressive Lego sculptures. This guy looks familiar - I think I’ve seen him somewhere before.
And this model is VERY Melbourne.
Talking about trains and trams and things - we got Mike back to the station in time to catch the Traralgon train - but we’d miss-read the timetable and it was in time to catch the train FROM Traralgon, not TO Traralgon. He had to catch the next train - which unfortunately put him in the middle of all the people leaving the Caufield Cup (horse racing). Thankfully he was early enough that it wasn’t too crowded, and the crowd wasn’t too drunk. He made it home safely.
I made it back to the boat, and arrived home on Sunday morning.
So that was my weekend. How was yours?

For those who don’t realize it - the moon didn’t blow up last night, so life continues.
It’s Bathurst tomorrow. Australia’s premier sporting day. Who cares about the footy grand final or the Melbourne cup - they are all small fish compared to Bathurst.
So stand by for another classic Ford vs Holden race. Holden had the upper hand in the qualifying - so it’s all down to race day.
Sadly this is also the last Bathurst (at least for a while) where team Tripple8 will be racing Fords. Next year they are defecting to Holdens - and we wish them the worst of the luck with the move (lol - not really, they are nice blokes even if they are traitors).
So can Whincup and Lowndes do it again this year and beat Peter Brock’s record of wins in a row? I’ll support them as long as they don’t do it again next year in a Holden.
So sit back and prepare for a day of V8 action!
