I went to the flicks with my parents and sister to see Love the Beast on Saturday night.
Sadly it's only showing for a single night in Devonport - and I won't be around - so I had to make the trek to Launceston. Normally the trek is in reverse - as the Devonport cinema is far superiour. Why only one night - that's crazy.
For those who don't know - Love the Beast is a sort of documentary about Eric Bana and his car (the Beast). He's had the car for years, rebuilt it, raced it in Targa, and stacked it. It's a jolly good movie though. He talks to Jeremy Clarkson and Dr Phil about the love of cars and things.
It does a better coverage of Targa than most of the offical Taga round-ups. Great ad for the state.
Just thought I'd mention that it was good - and if you like cars at all - you'd enjoy it. It's not just for total rev-heads.

I happened to be in Toyworld today (hunting for some things from their catalogue which they didn't have) and I noticed something odd. There were a few new additions to the lego 'pocket money' sets. These are small sets for about $6 each - and there were pirate ones!
I had to take a second look.
Lego hasn't made pirate lego for years.
Well, I lie - it made some stupid stuff for a little while in 2004 - but the last true pirate lego was discontinued in 1997! There were a couple of re-releases in the Lego Legends range in 2001 - but the pirates have been extinct ever since.
So I did some research when I got back - and lo and behold - Lego have bought the pirates back!
Gone is the dodgey over-sized junk from the 2004 failed sets. Lego Pirates are now once again the correct size (I call them Lego-Men, Lego calls them Minifigures).
The new stuff is still rather lame when compared to the original - but it's a great step in the right direction. If I was going to collect Pirates - I'd definatly stick with the old-school stuff, but for kids this is great news. Lego Pirates can once again be the envy of kids everywhere! And maybe some (like me) won't ever grow out of it.

The Viking Invasion of Church Camp...jawaproMon 09/03/2009 10:23 PM
Well - I’m back!
The secret is out - that little helmet thing in the previous photos was not my costume for Church Camp. I was indeed going as a Viking - but a much better one. And I was telling no one...
That’s also a large part of the reason I’ve been so busy the last week. Tim’s been the mastermind behind the helmet, and I’ve spent a large amount of time at his place working on it - while trying to get everything else organized too.
Normally I wouldn’t bother - or at least not put much effort in - but I’ve wanted a Viking costume for a while now, so I went all out (as much as I can anyway).
Klutz went as a templar - and Bradley was another Viking. He used my latex helmet and shoulder pads. They didn’t look right on me - and besides, Vikings never actually had horns.
Now - as to my costume.
Mum is to thank for the cloak, the Geneva School Fair is to thank for the fur around the boots (slippers). I made the shield and the chainmail - and of course, Tim made the helmet.
Tim’s a brilliant sort of friend. When you are discussing helmets and things, he doesn’t just think about cardboard and paper mache - he goes and gets some steel and an oxy torch. Yep - the helmet is the real deal!
I helped somewhat.
But it’s defiantly Tim’s masterpiece.
It weighs a fair bit - but together with my shield and sword - it is actually serviceable. My shield isn’t terribly strong (mdf) and the sword is liable to shatter if you hit sometime hard enough - but the helmet is pretty much perfect. Ready to be worn into combat.
More on the sword in a later post.
Church camp itself was good - the talks were good and the time with friends was great - but it still sucks that it was on a long weekend.
And just to prove that we weren’t the only ones to get dressed up - here are a few more of the troops. There were adults too - but Turkey was taking the photos, and seems to have ignored them.
You can’t half tell that Clancy’s dad is a sign-writer. Check out that shield!

Sorry about the lack of posting guys.
I've been rather busy. In fact - it's been flat out.
I'll post after the long weekend to explain what I've been up to.

Ok - so I'm crabby now.
Church Camp is in a week or so. This year sounds pretty good - the topics are intersting, time with friends is always great, and it has a Medi-eval theme, so I can go as a Viking (medi-eval enough).
BUT.
It's a standard weekend camp, but they've put it on a long weekend.
Who on earth thought that was a good idea?
Long weekends are precious - you don't get many of them a year. It's a chance to do something that can't fit on a normal weekend.
If the Church Camp actually made use of a long weekend I wouldn't mind - but it's wasting it. The Camp is still going to finish on Sunday. What a waste...
I've half a mind to boycott the whole thing just on principle.
