Too tired to blog about the rest of the weekend just now - but it'll come soon.
After the weather being bad enough to stop Turkey going to Hobart the night before, and my mate from work saying that his house at Paradise had been hit hard by winds on Thursday and heaps of trees had come down - it probably wasn’t what you'd call an ideal time to be going camping (up the road from Paradise). But that’s what we did - and it was awesome!
Thanks to everyone who came - and I'll post more photos soon.

Game OnjawaproSun 19/09/2010 10:52 PM

Wow - what a weekend!
But before I can get to the weekend proper - there was Thursday.
I had Thursday off because Turkey and Emma had decided to go to the Game On exhibition in the Launceston Museum. Thursday worked for both of them, so I made sure I could get it off too.
Game On is awesome. It’s an exhibit about the history of computer games (although, mainly arcade and console games and PCs hardly get a look in).
Turkey (being a uni student) is an early riser, so it was barely past midday when he arrived. Lol indeed - and I thought I was bad.
In Turkey’s defence, it was pretty awful weather in places on Thursday. There was snow on the Midlands when he came up. Launceston and Devonport themselves were fine though.
Once Turkey finally made an appearance we got into the gaming. It’s seriously awesome playing old games on the original hardware.
I fell in love with the Asteroids machine. Why is it that so many years later, we still can’t make a monitor that is as pure awesome as the asteroids CRT? If Turkey and I lived in the same place, I think we’d have to go halves and buy one.
Quite a few of the games were running on projectors and were emulated on PCs, which lost some of the charm of using the old equipment, but the old games that were there made up for it.
Game On 2.0 is an international exhibit, and Launceston is it’s only Australian stop - so try to get out there and take a look.
Turkey was going to head back to Hobart early but got a call from his parents to say the weather was terrible down there and the roads were snowed in, so to stay up north. Doesn’t take much convincing for Turkey to come and stay at my house - so he did.
The drive back wasn’t bad, but you could tell it was pretty windy in patches.
And of course, after Game On, on Friday morning I had to dig out my old Sega and Atari so Turkey could try them out before heading home :)

Ulverstone Car Rally (and other stuff)jawaproSat 11/09/2010 08:19 PM
Stupidly busy lately.
Went to Melbourne during the week for work - and ended up working half of today (Saturday).
So the upshot is that I haven’t posted in a while.
The only really big news (relatively speaking anyway) is that we won the Ulverstone Church Car Rally. Not bad for the ‘Out of Towners’ team. It was me, Tim, and Tom.
It wasn’t the normal sort of Rally Tim does, but one where you have to follow clues and find things - the sort you can do legally on main roads.
Probably should have warned them beforehand that the winners have to organize next years. Oh well...
We were in Tim’s Evo, which made it fun and meant we probably did more of the rally sidewise than was intended. I was all going well until Tim farted and got a flat tyre. The two are probably not related, but they happened at the same time. Tim’s spare is one of those stupid limited-use tyre things. Probably the first time his Evo’s done 80k/h on the open highway. It’s not used to going slow.
In other news, Emma came up for a while and had to call the police when a man came looking for sanctuary because he was being attacked by a group of kids. Strange times...
The usual gang got together on Friday and went to watch Despicable Me, which wasn’t bad. Most of it was fairly standard fare, but had some truly awesome moments.
So that’s it for now. Catch you on the other side.

The War Began Today...jawaproFri 03/09/2010 09:46 PM
Just got back from the flicks. Darn good movie!
For an Aussie flick - this is pretty awesome. The book is still way better - but that’s to be expected. The characters in the movie actually comment that books are always better than movies - lol.
Now not all the acting is brilliant, and some of the characters aren’t quite right - but it still makes for a great time. Not only is it on my to-buy dvd list, I’m quite tempted to go and see it again at the movies at least once, so that’s pretty high praise.
So if you want my recommendation - go and watch it. Some of the early scenes have a bit of cringe factor with some of the acting, but when it gets rolling, it’s awesome.
There are some things I want to complain about though - so if you haven’t read the books, you can ignore the rest of the post.
Robyn - she’s over-the-top in this. Robyn in the books was Christian, and that was a very important part of who she was - but she wasn’t this stereotyped and over-the-top.
Chris - ok, so it’s been a while since I’ve read this, but this isn’t how I remembered Chris. It’s not completely wrong, but it’s a very different take than the one I remembered imagining while reading the book.
Fi - Fi should be far better looking than Ellie. That’s the first thing that hit me when I saw the posters too. Ellie should not outshine Fi. But maybe that’s just me - my mates thought Fi was pretty hot.
In the movie Fi doesn’t think she’s beautiful - but I don’t remember her having a body image issue in the books. I think it’s time I read them again.
Homer - Homer’s Homer. They did a pretty good job here, although I think he might be a little more.. destructive in the start than he was in the books.
Kevin and Corrie are ok - although I don’t remember the barn conversation from the books.
Ellie’s dog shouldn’t be dead. In the books she was still alive, but only just. Personally I found that far worse.
What else? Ellie wouldn’t have ridden a dirt bike into town with no helmet at the start, and when they’re driving the truck, they would have been ducking more - but they’re small issues.
On the whole it’s a great story - so you should defiantly give it a go. And if you’ve seen it - what did you think?
It’s time to go to war...
