V8s at Symmons PlainsjawaproMon 14/11/2011 09:38 AM
This weekend we were back at Symmons Plains for another round of the V8 supercars. A couple of months ago this was looking like it might be the last one in the state - but seems our lousy government have managed to sort themselves out enough to sign another contract for a couple of years. It's the biggest sporting event in the state - we don't want to lose it! Wouldn't mind losing the government though...
The weather was downright awefull. Lots of sun and heat - Dad and I had to buy umbrellas to hide behind to escape the sun. At least they were good looking umbrellas...
Regardless of our support for Ford - the day belonged to Holden. The guys from Team Vodaphone are still dominating, even after their switch to Holden. Jamie was a full back straight ahead of second place, which was his teammate! It didn't all go their way though - Frosty got the best jump off the line and lead for the first quarter. Third place was a real battle too - but Tander just held out against a charging Winterbottom, who lost some time at the pits.
Jason came along again this year - but I'm not sure it was primarily for the cars...
And almost as awesome as the V8s - I found a G60 in the carpark! Great looking truck, with a Marks 5speed gearbox! Left the bloke my number in case he decides to sell.
All in all - a great day out.

Sanctum ReviewjawaproFri 11/11/2011 11:46 AM
It occurred to me last night that I haven’t posted for a while and my website still thinks it’s my sister’s birthday (which it isn’t anymore).
I was trying to work out where all the time had gone - and there’s a simple answer to that - Sanctum!
Sanctum is an odd sort of computer game. You play as a weird looking anime chick - but don’t worry about that - you can’t see yourself. Instead what you can see are waves and waves of aliens trying to attack the reactor or stargate or whatever the thing you’re trying to protect is called. Probably the ‘Sanctum’. As you can tell - story is not this game's strong suite.
Like most first person games, you run around with guns and shoot things. Unlike most games, the bad guys don’t attack you. They just walk in the most direct route to the reactor thing and damage it unless you kill them first. And apart from the first couple of waves, it isn’t possible for you to kill them before they do - not on your own.
As well as being a shooter, Sanctum is a Tower Defence game. For those who didn’t know, Plants Vs Zombies is also a Tower Defence game - in case you’ve played that.
In Sanctum you use large blocks to make a ‘maze’. The aliens will take the shortest route to the reactor, so you make that route as long as possible. This gives you more chances to attack them. You also place towers that will also attack them. Generally the towers do the bulk of the work for you - but it takes a lot of strategy to work out what towers to put where and whether it’s worth spending your winnings on more towers, upgrading existing towers, or upgrading your hand weapons.
A massive horde of weak aliens need lots of little guns, while a few tough big aliens need powerful guns - so it's always a trade-off. And then you get the flying aliens who need different tactics again!
It’s also co-op, so up to 4 people can work together, building the maze and defending the base.
It’s ridiculously fun - even if it looks completely daft on first glance.
Highly recommended...

Happy Birthday Sis!jawaproFri 04/11/2011 09:13 AM
It’s my little sister’s birthday today. Happy Birthday Loopy (known as Emma to most folks).
Figured it was a good excuse to upload an old photo of the two of us. Yep - even back then she made me do all the work!
See you tonight Loopy.

Meet KayleejawaproFri 04/11/2011 12:08 AM
Congrats to Turkeybrain on the new addition to his family! Meet Kaylee, the series 1 Landrover.
Ok, so they aren’t Patrols, but they are extremely awesome non the less.
Kaylee is a short wheelbase series 1 with a rare factory hardtop. It’s till got the original engine, but he’s not yet sure if it’s a runner.
His other Landy is a series 2 long wheelbase known as Serenity.
Turkey’s from Hobart, but Serenity was found in Launceston and taken down in the first Statewide Shuffle. Quite an epic adventure.
Kaylee on the other hand, was rescued from scrap merchants who happened to move into the block next door. Yep, Turkey found Kaylee simply by looking over his fence! Talk about convenient, and he got her for a ripper price too.
Not only that - but he managed to off-load the carcass of an old car he no longer wanted at the same time - so win win win!
His ideal Landy collection was a long wheelbase Series 2 and a short Series 1 - so it's perfect. Don't you just love it when everything falls into place!
I can’t wait to get down to Hobart to meet Kaylee in the flesh. Or metal, or whatever.

Return to the TarnsjawaproMon 31/10/2011 10:24 AM
Back to the Gog again. Really like it up here. This time I had working 4WD and Dad decided to come along in the mighty Maverick. It was also Chris’s first time up here. The view wasn’t as good as it has been in the past (it was a cloudy and drizzly day) but it was still a good view. Here’s Dad taking the obligatory photo of the trig point at the old Fire Tower site.
Oscar and the Maverick admiring the view.
From here we pushed on along the track I’d done a few weeks ago (when I’d discovered my lack of 4wd). The track was much slipperier (what an odd looking word) but with 4wd it wasn’t too bad. On the way back we had to get a run up to make it up a slope that I’d previously driven up easily in 2wd.
We got to the slope that had ended my 2WD exploring the last time, and got up without much incident (although the Maverick attempted the harder route and had to give up). From here we push on towards the Tarns (yes, the photo is not of the slope in question, but it’s more interesting).
And eventually we reached the trees. Someone has done a great job of clearing the track to this point, but that’s where they gave up. I’m assuming it was a lack of time or petrol for the chainsaw or something - as they’d cut through worse so far.
Armed with Dad’s chainsaw, my bowsaw, and Chris’s muscles to pull things out of the way - we soon had the track clear again.
We had to do it a couple of times, but sure enough - I finally got Oscar to the Tarns. Goal complete! Still - I want to see where the track goes next.
For some reason I forgot to take any photos - so here’s an old one from the archives:
