Suitcase Repairs

When preparing for our trip to Queensland, I decided to tackle repairing my suitcase. I didn't end up taking it on that trip - but it's still better to have it useful.

This suitcase went all around Europe with me, and on many trips since. But somewhere along the way, one of the wheels got jammed. As it wouldn't spin, it just wore down. Talk about a flat spot!

So I decided it needed a new set of wheels - and of course, I went for the full mud terrain option.

In the second photo you can see the remains of the original wheel, as well as the replacement.

While in Queensland - we couldn't help but go to Sizzlers!

Years and years ago Sizzler came to Tassie - but they pulled out after a few years. My theory is that us Tasmanian's were a little too hungry for the all-you-can-eat aspect and were driving them broke.

It's been twelve years since we last went to a Sizzlers - and that was in Darwin and Cairns. So it was high time we returned.

No sign of Stacey this time (or whatever he's called now) - but it was an awesome meal and a walk down memory lane.

Caloundra: Part 2

Well - I’m back from Sunny Queensland!

Before we left we got some advice from some of the Queensland locals - who all said it was very cold up there and to bring jumpers etc. So I packed a jacket instead of my shorts. Never trust a Queenslander - even if they are ex-Tasmanians. It might not have been too hot, but it certainly wasn’t cold - and I would have preferred my shorts given all the walking we did - the jacket never came out of the suitcase. We were quite comfortable while Queenslanders were saying it's freezing. Ah well...

Turns out I didn’t take all that many photos  - so this won’t be an overly long post. The photo above is of one of the Glasshouse Mountains. I’m not sure why they were named after glasshouses, but they are pretty darn cool. It’s flat country, and suddenly there’s a mountain sticking up!

We did a lot of wandering around the place - here is the view of the Glasshouse Mountains from a lookout up the coast a bit.

Speaking of never trusting a Queenslander - here’s one of the locals. He'll steal your lunch if you're not looking.

We did a cruise up the Noosa River and into Lake Cootharaba and the Everglades. It was really quite awesome - check out the reflections on the river!

And here is a photo of the other tour boat - bogged! Yep, she’s not going anywhere. The lake is so shallow you can walk across it with your head above water, but the section just before heading up the river to the Everglades is especially shallow. The technique is to get some of the passengers on the front to balance the boat as much as you can, and then give it the berries!

Seems the other tour boat couldn't make it across. As we came out, he was trying to go in. We ended up having to swap boats so we went home in the one that had been stuck - while the other tour operator got our boat bogged as well (we assume he eventually made it through, but as we didn’t see him again - he might still be out there!). Apparently if it gets really bad, they throw the passengers overboard and get them to push.

It was probably the best cruise I've done - and now I can say I've helped rescue a bogged boat!

Beyond that we did a heap of markets, some general exploring, shopping, and even went for a swim. It was a really nice break.

But when you get off the plane in Launceston and those eight degrees hit you - I couldn’t help but smile! Queensland is awesome - but I belong where it's cool.

Howdy from Sunny Queensland!
Yep - I’m on holidays with the family again. This year we decided to go to Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast (north of Brisbane) instead of back to Port Macquarie. There’s nothing wrong with Port Macquarie (we’ll be back!) - but they say a change is as good as .... well, a holiday.

Queenslanders think it’s cold this time of the year - but it’s quite warm for us Taswegians.

We were able to catch up with Klutz, Amy, and Lillian yesterday in Brisbane too - which was awesome.

In unrelated news, I was " " that close to buying another G60 as well - but I got outbid - so that saves the trouble of going to pick it up.

This time our hire car turned out to be a Toyota Aurion. It’s not bad, once you work out how to start it (keyless) and get over the fact that it locks itself when you start moving.

Shed-Prep

A good day’s shed-prep. That’s my clothesline on the ground. We replanted it today because the shed will go where it used to live. With a bit of luck and a decent rain, it should take root and flourish in it’s new location.

Not so with the old Nectarine and Pom-Pom trees I cut down a few weeks ago. I finally finished cutting them up and loaded the remains onto the trailer. It’s amazing how much smaller you can make things by cutting them up so much. It would have been about 10 trailer loads the way it was at the end of this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wI31t1Trhc) but after all the chopping it’s a single trailer load and a small stack of firewood. Took a few evenings work (in the dark) - but feels good to finish.

Next it’s time to work out levels etc.
