Neptune's First DayjawaproMon 07/07/2008 09:18 PM
Everyone - say hello to my new house-mate.
Currently his name is Neptune Veylisa Sniffers - but that's subject to change.
I took Emma to the RSPCA in Devonport today - but they wouldn't take her - so while we were there, I adopted a cat.
I've been planning to get one for a while - because I love cats, and my house felt like it needed one.
Emma and I went in to the cat house at the RSPCA to look for a nice sleepy cat, but instead feel in love with this not-so-sleepy one.
I had to go back to work, so Emma brought him home. The whole traumatic event of moving and Emma's driving made him pretty panicy, so it took him a while to settle down again.
He's still pretty nervous when someone makes a noise, but he's settling down pretty well.
He's had a chance to explore around - including checking out my dvd collection (He's got his priorities right - I think we'll get on just fine).
He's had a pretty big day, and still hasnt gotten the hang of doors (he keeps getting confused why half the house isnt there anymore) so he's taking it pretty easy this evening.
We'll keep you informed as he settles in.
* For those who dont know - Emma is my sister.

Phaeton Recovers.jawaproWed 02/07/2008 09:22 PM
Well - I'm still not sure what was wrong - but Phaeton (my Computer) seems to be recovering from his mystery illness.
A week ago - Phaeton was being very reliable. It hadnt been rebooted for about a week and was going strong.
A week ago my cousin Klutz came to visit (which was good) and desided to sleep in the computer room instead of the lounge room (which was also good, as he has a habit of sleeping in the nude and hanging his backside out of the covers - remember, we traveled together for 2 weeks from Mount Isa to Tassie so I know what I'm talking about).
For some reason - sharing a room with Klutz offended Phaeton. He started getting less reliable, and crashing once a day or so.
The longer Klutz stayed - the worse it got. Maybe Phaeton is allergic...
After Klutz left, the problems persisted. I could turn Phaeton on, windows would boot and hang around for a few minutes and then the machine would crash.
I dont mean like a windows crash - more akin to shutting down due to over-heating.
So I pulled Phaeton out from his home and relocated him to the lounge room to investigate and see if any fans were playing up or anything (while watching my new TV).
There was nothing wrong with the fans I could see - so I plugged it together in the lounge room with a spare monitor and spare keyboards and things. No problems at all - ran all night and the following day perfectly.
So I started re-introducing things to see if they caused the error. I hooked it back up to the network - no issues. I used the original monitor and keyboard - no issues.
I have now moved it back to it's home under the desk - with all the original gear - and it's running fine.
Maybe it just needed a holiday and a chance to watch tv to overcome the ordeal of sharing a room with Klutz.
Or maybe it was jealous of Jade'sFire (my old PC) which is currently hooked up to my TV and operating as a media centre.
Either way - Phaeton seems to have gotten over it for now.
Having said all this - it will probably crash again in a minute...

Dr Who Series FinaljawaproTue 01/07/2008 09:12 PM
One word - WOW.
Or as the Doctor might be more likely to say - Fantastic!
I just watched the first part of the Series 4 final. (thanks to the Internet - the series has only just started down here)
When I say series 4, I am only counting since the Reboot of Dr Who. It's actually series 30 or something otherwise I think.
Anyway - it blew me away.
Some episodes are just sheer brilliance - and would impress anyone. This one might not be quite like that - but for a geeky fan-boy, this was brilliant.
How much could you shove into an episode of Dr Who?
Rose Tyler is back. I got really sick of her - but it serves the story to have her back.
Martha Jones is back.
Captain Jack is back - along with Gwen and Ianto from Torchwood (who have never met the Doctor or been on Dr Who before.
That would be big - but it doesnt end there.
Sarah Jane Smith is back - along with her 'son' from the Sarah Jane Smith spin-off show.
The Daleks are back (which isnt much of a suprise) but so far at last seem to actually show some of the menace that made them scary originally.
Unfourtuantly they'll probably die too easily in the next part - that's the sort of way the Daleks have been used lately. Lots of them show up, look threatening, and then all get wiped out pretty easily.
Yet more familar faces turn up, and we also get to find out more about the Time War and the Shadow Proclaimation.
A big bad guy returns (you wont have to guess long to work out who) and if I'm not mistaken - we also hear some drums at one point. Maybe someone else is returning next episode....
Something rather massive and important appears to be happening at the end of the episode - but wether it will actually happen or not remains to be seen.
So from a long time Dr Who fan's perspective - this was an awesome episode. For a casual viewer, it will probably just be strange and confusing.
All that would have improved it would be four things:
1: The sound of drums eventuating.
2: K-9 returning
3: The Return of the Time Lords.
4: Someone else had written it.
The final was written by Russel T. Davis - who revived the series (and is respected for that) but wrote some lousy episodes (and few or none of the best ones) and has a special talent for creating these great situations for series finals, and then failing to pull them off.
We have one more episode to go - so perhaps the first 3 points will still happen - and RTD will actually pen a series final that lives up to it's promise for once.
Roll on the weekend and the 2nd half!

Emma and Klutz at my placejawaproMon 30/06/2008 09:53 PM
Last week for about 4 days, my sister Emma and my cousin Klutz came and stayed at my place.
I had to work during the day - but Klutz and Emma spent their time watching my new TV and playing my Xbox and similar things.
From my part - it was a great time. Emma did the cooking, and Klutz at least pretended to do the dishes.
Lots of fun - but Klutz and Emma managed to kill my computer. It had been running reliably 24hours a day - and then, after Klutz shared a room with it for 3 nights, it wouldn’t even run for 10 minutes without crashing and freezing.
Then again - sleeping in the same room as Klutz might drive anyone crazy….
So now I have to cook for myself again - and work out how to fix my PC.

Post Office CollectionjawaproThu 26/06/2008 08:38 AM
The local Post Office knows me pretty well by now. Yesterday I had 3 parcels to collect.
1 parcel was a Mick Thomas CD.
A second parcel was an Ipod rip-off (infinitly superior to an actual Ipod) from Hong-Kong.
The last (and biggest one) was a collection of lego from bricklink.com that went a long way to completing my sets. Still have a little more to get though.
The post ofice guy just shakes his head when I walk in these days.
