End of MovemberjawaproMon 03/12/2007 10:47 PM
Well - it's offical.
Movember is over.
The judging has been done.
The verdict has been given.
I dont have the lamest Mo at work!
I have the second lamest Mo.
And I think the photo makes it look even lamer than it really is - but I'll admit it's not terribly impressive.
The two winners - Darren and Kurt are both under investigation by the anti-doping commision.
As there are still a few people who havent coughed up their donations yet - I havent shaved my Mo off yet. Personally I dont mind it that much - but certain people (mainly my sister) find it disgusting. I'm not the only person who hasnt shaved theirs off yet either.
And the Hummer? No - that wasn't my prize for not comming last. It was just something I collected on the weekend. I've always wanted a Hummer - and this one was cheap in Chickenfeed.
Anyway - back on topic - here's a photo of the Movember crew from work.
And on special request from Turkeybrain - here's a slightly better shot of my Mo. Still looks pretty lame though.

Project PhaetonjawaproThu 29/11/2007 09:21 AM
Well - I have finally decided to upgrade my PC. So I'm launching Operation Phaeton - to build myself a replacement for the gallant JadesFire.
I could just upgrade parts of JadesFire and do it a little cheaper - but I dont want to end up doing something stupid and ending up with no PC at all - so I plan to build my new PC (Phaeton) as a seperate machine entirely and running both alongside for a while.
Which means a new PC case. And currently I'm planning to use the CoolerMaster Ammo 533 (pictured). I love the chunky sort of rugged look of the case. It's supposed to look like an ammo box from the army. I'm not sure how successful that is - but its still a sweet case. And an extra bonus - if you scratch it, you havent totally runied the look of the case - because it's designed to look a little beaten up already.
Turkeybrain has volunteered to help me sort out the inards for Phaeton. I'm not as up with current hardware as I should be. Apparently there's a heap of new stuff comming out in January - so I'll be doing my shopping around then for the main parts of the system - but for now I can get the case and officially launch the project.
When Phaeton comes online and runs well for a while - the current JadesFire will become my server - in that other case I've been working on. But one step at a time for now....

One Night with the KingjawaproWed 28/11/2007 10:07 PM
Well - that was a suprise.
I saw this movie advertise online (and only slightly at that) but I thought I'd check it out anyway.
It is a movie based on the book of Esther from the Bible.
The trailers didnt look too bad - so I thought I'd check it out.
I thought I'd probably be the only one in the cinema. Boy was I wrong!
The fullest I've ever seen a cinema was when I went to see Star Wars III at the midnight showing - but this was pretty close too.
When I bought my ticket - they said there was only 3 seats left. And they were all in the very front row.
Fourtuantly a few guys from Geneva (a school I went to for a while) were up the back - and spotted me (probably think I'm really lame going to the movies on my own) and squeezed 5 people onto 4 seats so I could fit up there too.
As far as the movie goes it wasnt bad. It wasnt great either though. Some of the time it felt like a proper epic movie like Lord of the Rings - but other times some bad acting brought it all crashing down as well.
For a more main-stream movie, it didnt do a bad job of telling the story of Esther. Unfourtuantly some of the time people mumbled and were hard to understand.
It had some decent actors in it too. The guy who played Gimli in LOTR was here as Mordaci. And Baltar from the new Battlestar series was here as a villan as well.
Baltar's role was tied to the king Agag from the much earlier time of King Saul. Not sure if that's at all Biblical - I'll have to look it up.
So all in all it wasnt a bad movie - but it's not going to set the world alight or anything. And I'm going to re-read the book of Esther to see how accurate it was in the important parts.
I hadnt realised it before - but the King in this story was Xerxes. As in the king who attacked Greece. Yes - the one from the movie 300. In this movie he didnt look as ugly or evil as the guy in 300 - in fact, he was shown as a peace-wanting wimp who was forced into war.
From memory - he had his first queen killed - in the movie it was implied she was merely banished from the office of queen. (edit - I was wrong. This was more acurate than I remembered)
Would have been more interesting watching a more accurate version - but it still wasnt too bad.

Rough Maps for Isa TripjawaproWed 28/11/2007 12:52 PM
Well - it appears I have some rather ignorant friends - so here's a map of where Mount Isa actually is, and the rough route we're planning to take back to Tassie.
The Black Arrow is pointing to Mount Isa - mainly because Nifen didnt know where it was. The blue line is the stuff we'll be driving, and the green line is the part of the journey that we'll do onboard the Spirit. The green arrows were there when I stole the map from google - ignore them.
I'm flying to Brisbane on the way up - but I havent marked that.
And for my American friends - here is another rough map - with Australia and America overlayed - so you can get an idea of distance etc.

Tickets are bookedjawaproTue 27/11/2007 09:07 PM
Well - it's offical.
I've booked air-fares and gotten my holidays approved. So I'm off to Mount Isa in mid-January.
As an employee of TT-Line, I get a free annual trip on the Spirit. So I'm going over on the ship, spending a day or so with Mr Trojen, and then flying to Mount Isa (via Brisbane) to catch up with Klutz - and driving back down to Tassie from there with him.
And as an extra bonus - we're planning to spend a day or two with Mike (Oblivion) and his family.
It's starting to feel real now that I've actually spent money on it. Really looking forward to it.
