Well, that was unexpected. I was lying in bed rapidly devouring the latest Matthew Reilly book (I want to finish it before I leave because its a large hardcover and I dont want to cart it with me). I leave on Saturday (2 days time), in case you didnt know.

And out of blue I get a call from Klutz. Well, actually I get an SMS asking me if I was awake first - which I probably would have been after the phone beeped anyway.

Klutz rang me up and said that they've started paying more attention to the news - and the route we were planning to take is right through the path of the flooding that's been on the news. I dont watch enough news to know myself - but apparently Winton and Longreach and places like that are rather wet at the moment.

So we are currently talking about our backup plan, heading west and then down the center through the Alice.

At the moment it's a little up in the air. It depends on the weather. We could still follow the original route, but chances are we'll head west instead. I'll keep you posted...

And in case you're completely confused because you havent been reading the blog lately - I'm travelling up to Melbourne by ship on Saturday, and then flying to My Isa on Monday to travel back to Tassie with Klutz in his car (yes, driving). Klutz is moving back down here to go to Uni, and I'm just acting as his co-pilot on the way down.

You guys are smart to have a plan B.  How much farther is the western route?

I'm not sure. Klutz said something like an extra 200k - which is hardly anything, and I think he's off the mark. I recon it's more than that - but still quite doable. The biggest annoyance is that we might not be able to catch up with the family on the east of Melbourne this way - but if we have extra time, we still might.

The other alternative was to go further east and down the coast, but apparently it's flooded there too.

Klutz has a blog at http://www.randomcomplexity.com and might have more information up soon.

I reckon it would be significanlty longer to go via Alice Springs, but if it means you can actually travel that way rather than being held up by flood water, I reckon you might well be on a winner. That is if Headless doesn't pass out from the heat...

Enjoy the trip, both of you.
