The Flights

Well - here’s a chance to update you.

After picking my sister up from Tiani and Andrew’s wedding, we went back to my parent’s house for the night. A stupidly early morning after a late night - we had to be at the Launceston airport at 8. From here it was a short hope over the strait to Melbourne, where we had 7 hours to wait for our next flight. We didn’t book these ourselves - they were included as part of the tour, otherwise we would have tried a later flight from Launceston.

The time was not wasted though - because Bec, Mike, and Gabs made the trip into Melbourne to catch up with us (and buy some donuts).

We then went through security into the International lounge and waited for our flight. We were pretty tired by this stage.

The first flight (to Singapore) wasn’t too bad. We ended up being stuck in the middle of the middle isle (about the worst place to be) but it wasn’t too bad. The service was great - even if the seats are too crowded.

We landed in Singapore, and had a little look around. The board said that we had 3 hours before the next flight (we thought it should have been 1) and there was a person with a sign saying to come back to that gate in 1 hour.

It was my first time in a foreign country - and it wasn’t very exciting, just very hot. I didn’t even get a stamp in my passport!

We went for a walk, and used the free internet. Unfortunately, we were wrong with our flight details - or more accurately, we were right, but hadn’t understood the instructions properly. The Qantas flight that bought us here was continuing to London, but it wasn’t the flight we were booked on.

We went back to the gate we had come out from - but then our names were announced over the PA. We should have been at a gate on the far end of the airport.

We sprinted.

Emma wasn’t as able to sprint - as her bag’s much more difficult to manage than my backpack, and she was still suffering from sunburn from the wedding photos.

But we made it - and were the last 2 on the plane.

"We have learned to read our clue."

This flight was longer - but I had an aisle seat, so we could get up more easily. I managed to get a decent amount of light sleep - so I wasn’t too bad when we landed. It was pretty hot on the plane though - and we didn’t have individual air vents like we did on the Qantas one.

Eventually we landed in London. The terminal we ended up in at Heathrow was not really very exciting. In fact, compared to Melbourne and Singapore, it was very boring. We did manage to find some showers so we could feel a little more human. Unfourtuantly the showers are controlled using sensors, not taps. Emma had left her shampoo in the shower, so after getting dressed, she reached back in to get it, and triggered the shower, and got wet all over again.

A more considerate brother would have swapped bags with his sister if she were struggling.
