The Next Doctor

Well - it's been announced - David Tennant is leaving the Tardis - and we know who the next Doctor is.

The 2008 Christmas Special was called "The Next Doctor".

That guy in the photo is the doctor. No - not him, the one next to him (not the Cyberman either).

But he's not really the next doctor. I won't spoil the story for you if you havent seen it (hasnt been aired down here yet) but he's not the very next doctor. That honour goes to some-one else.

There were heaps of people who were considered. We could have had a black docotor (Paterson Joseph) - he was apparently very close to getting the role. There was also a lot of talk about James Nesbitt who is a brilliant actor (have you seen Jekyll?) but would have made a very different Doctor. There was even talk of Catherine Zeta Jones becoming the first female doctor (probably not very seriously).

But fear not - it wasn't any of them.

It was...

Someone I've never heard of.

A guy called Matt Smith.

He's going to be the youngest Dr ever.

He'll be getting the keys to the Tardis on the next Christmas special - or so the story goes at the moment.

Stay tuned to see if he has what it takes to take over from the awesome Tenant.

I'm all a bit confused by this. It was my understanding that David Tennant had a contract until the end of 2010, but there would be no Dr Who this year, as he had other commitments. Does this mean that they've come to some solution with the contract and David Tennant will no longer be making another series, or what? As I thought there was at least one more series with him. Not that it will be a bad thing, a new Doctor. It's always interesting to get new personalities in there.

Well, you're right - Tennant did have a contract. And yes, there wasn't going to be any Dr. Who because he decided to take a break and do a stage production circuit. But the contract was cancelled - not sure by who - and auditions began. So Doctor Who #11 is Matt Smith, an actor that has appeared in several small small-screen shows.

Ah, so that's what happened. I'm kind of glad actually, as hopefully it will mean more Dr Who faster. But then again, if he's going to come in at the Christmas Special at the end of this year, then there's no real difference!

Thanks for explaining though!

He doesn't look like a doctor - he looks more like a doctor's companion.

I'm afraid first impressions aren't good.

As I understand it - there is no season this year - just a collection of specials.

Could be wrong though.
