Well - don’t you just love Long Weekends? I do.
Saturday was the Axon LAN. Code-named 'Just add water', this was the first LAN for the year.
There was the usual collection of geeks (including a surprising number of girls) and computers etc.
We got some awesome gaming done. Dota, COD4, Savage, and Flatout 2 (as demonstrated by Klutz)
John (Martian_Leader) collected his $600 graphics card I’d ordered from ITestate for him. He borrowed my screw-driver (cause I’m always prepared for things like that) and installed it in his case (it only just fits). He then turned his computer on - and the power for the entire table died.
After someone reset the fuse, he had another go. (pictured as he was turning it on the 2nd time). It worked this time - but his computer power supply isn’t large enough to support such an intense card - so he’s going to have to wait until he gets a new PSU before he can make use of his $600 card.
Ah - the joys of being a geek.
On a personal note - this should be the last LAN for my trusty Jade’sFire. She’s been a good PC for a few years - but she’s showing her age now. (Jade’s Fire is the name of a space-ship, and like all ships, you talk about it as if it’s feminine).
By the next LAN, I should have Phaeton up and running. If I don’t, I think I’ll be pretty annoyed by then. Although, if my friends organize a small LAN during Easter, I might still have Jade’sFire - depends when Intel releases their new processor.
One of the truly annoying things about regular Axon LANs is the fact that they are Saturday night LANs.
Nexus used to be Friday night LANs. That meant it was hard to get there after work - but you could stay up all night and have Saturday to recover. On a Saturday night, I have to get home in decent time so I can get some sleep before Church.
Or that was the plan anyway - until I entered the DOTA competition, and my team started winning. I didn’t leave anywhere near as early as I’d planned to.
On the way home - it wasn’t exactly boring either.
As I drove into Exeter, I noticed some people pulled over on the side of the road (which is odd this early in the morning), and when I got to them I could see why. There was a car on fire around the corner.
It looked like it had been dumped and set ablaze.
I rang Tripple-0h and waited around for the fireys to arrive.
When they arrived it was rather boring, they didn’t even want to talk to me - just told me to stand back - how disappointing!.
I did manage a couple of hours of sleep before church, so I survived Sunday.
On Monday (which was also a holiday due to the Long Weekend) I checked out the Exeter Market for a while. As always, I hunted around the stalls of junk and toys, looking for odd collectibles that I could collect or resell.
After that, Dad and I spent a stupid amount of time trying to work out the crazy logic behind the wiring in my car, and adding some driving lights. We’d changed the headlights a while back - but it was still pretty dim, so these should help a lot.
I dont hate the way they look either.
We also worked on my new LAN crate - but more on that later.
I stayed in Exeter on Monday night, and drove through back to Devonport on Tuesday morning - but that wasn’t boring either.
I was stopped by some SES blokes, because a truck had lost it’s load on the Frankford highway. I had to hang around for 30 minutes or so while the crane moved things around.
Eventually we were allowed through, and I was able to find some phone signal to let work know I was running late.
