On Saturday I went into Launceston to pre-order Command and Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath. It's an expansion pack for CnC3. By pre-ordering it, I'll get an extra DVD when I pick it up with various making-of videos and things apparently.

But anyone worth their salt will already know about CnC3: KW. The big news is Tiberium.

I was walking through Birchalls looking at the magazines because Klutz wanted to buy a mag with Linux on it (I still think it's wrong to pay for a copy of Linux). As I was walking along, I had a look at the latest PCPowerPlay magazine - and lo and behold, Command and Conquer is on the cover - but it's not CnC.

There's a new game in the works. It's called Tiberium. Not Command and Conquer: Tiberium - it's just Tiberium. It's a first person shooter - like CnC: Renegade was.

So it's a new franchise - but based in the CnC universe. So we'll still have Kane and Nod - and the Scrin. But instead of building armys and waging war - you'll play the part of a squad commander. It'll be a normal FPS, but you'll also have team-mates you can order around.

Hopefully this isnt just EA trying to squeeze more money out of the franchise. Hopefully it will be a game worth playing.

There's a sweet intro trailer at http://www.gametrailers.com/game/6081.html as well as a gameplay video. It dosnt look bad (although I havent watched all of the gameplay video yet - had to go to work).

And in the mean time, we've got CnC:Kane's Wrath to look forward to.

^ Note - this is a fan created box art. Dunno what the actual case will look like.

At a guess, they're probably just trying to milk money out of the franchise again. I heard the original wasn't worth the disk you burnt it to, so hopefully this won't be a repeat. Mind you, I never played the original, so I can't really pass judgment on it either.

I'm sure you'll end up buying it and letting us all know how it went.

Let me say this - Renegade kicked Generals backside all the way to Mars.

Definatly not the low point in the series (which was Generals).

It was Westwoods first attempt at a shooter - but it was a pretty good one for it's era.

The single player game let you control the Commando from the original CnC and was quite a lot of fun. It had some bugs - but so do most games unless you patch them (which I never got around to doing). I did finish the game though - so the bugs werent too bad.

Multiplayer was where all the hype was though - and it wasnt bad. But it really needed a lot of players to make it work. Each side would have a base, and your team would have to work together to blow the other team's base up.

But with only the 4 or so players we had - it wasnt much chop. On some maps the base could defend itself well enough that you couldnt touch it. You really needed to storm it with more than 2 players at a time. Even driving a Mammoth tank - you'd still get wiped out if you were alone.

Other maps didnt have the base defences (or at least not as effective ones) and with only 2 people on each team, there werent enough people to both attack and defend. As soon as Nod got the flame tank into the other base - the game was basically over.

That flame tank was fantastic against buildings (and people too).

In otherwords, Renegade wasnt bad. But it wasnt brilliant either.

As someone who is a huge fan of CnC - the fact that it was within the same universe, had Westwood on the cover, and let you drive Mammoth Tanks - that was enough to make me love it.

The new game only hits one of those points (I think) so we'll see how it goes.

Hmm, as I said, I haven't played it so I couldn't really comment. Maybe I'm just confused about what I had heard about. I thought it was a bad one, but apparently I was wrong. At least in some areas. Oh well, I might have to try it out some time, see what I really think of it. It's always better to try something yourself to decide if you like it or not!

I agree. I normally want to try some software/games before I decide they suck. Because of such a mindset, I'm willing to give Vista a chance - not just bag it out like most people seem to.

I also gave Macs a chance - and now I can bag them out with the knowledge that I've used them - and they sucked even more than I expected them to.
