G60s put me in hospital...jawaproTue 02/04/2013 10:08 PM
I’ve often joked that G60s will be the death of me. This is normally due to the amount of time I spend looking at backyards and paddocks while I’m driving around trying to spot the old girls and NOT looking where I'm driving. But this weekend my own collection put me in hospital!
One of the websites is putting together a registry of Aussie G60s, so I headed down the paddock on Monday (Easter holiday) to grab all the VIN numbers so I can register mine.
That all went fine - so I headed back to the house.
After sitting down for a few minutes I thought my left felt a little damp, but when I touched it, there was no water or blood or anything. A few minutes later I felt like it again, and when I looked down I noticed there was a leech on my sock. No big issue - took it outside and killed it with salt. He wasn’t attached when I found him - but there was a mark on my leg where he looked like he had been - hadn’t drunk much anyway and couldn't have been there long.
That was fine - had leeches on my plenty of times before - the last time for over a day before I noticed (he was massive when he fell off).
But then I started getting really itchy, and Mum and Dad noticed my face was really red and swollen. Turns out my whole body was red and swelling up too - so they decided to take me into hospital.
The docs and nurses took it all fairly seriously. They gave me adrenaline and some other stuff I can’t remember the name of and kept a close eye on me for a while.
I got a nasty case of the shakes and my hands went really blue for a while. But I actually didn’t feel that bad - not sick as such.
Eventually it came under control and they watched me for a few more hours (7 in total!) before sending me home.
Now I have to go and get an epi-pen in case it happens again when I’m up the bush somewhere.
I’ve never been allergic to leeches before - so it’s a little odd (my sister is allergic though). It didn’t look like a tiger leech either.
The other possibility is that I actually got bitten by a snake. The marks that we assumed were from the leech could possible have been a snake’s fangs (they were two marks close together). I would have thought I’d have felt a snake strike though - and I certainly didn’t.
Regardless of what caused it - that trip to visit the G60s put me in hospital - and it’s made me far more wary of leeches...

A few people were worried by the image I posted last week and thought I was going to shave my beard off - but no, it's a slightly cryptic image of the can Nedry used to try and smuggle the dinosaur embryos off Jurassic Park.
Why blog it?
Well on Thursday I'm going to do something really nerdy. I'm taking a day off work and going interstate - to watch a 20yr old movie.
It's been 20yrs since Jurassic park was released, and I was too young to go and see it then. But it's getting a limited rerelease! So I'm off to Melbourne to watch it at Imax!
Geeky? Perhaps.
Awesome? Absolutely!

It’s been a while since I last dragged a G60 up from Hobart - so this weekend I collected another one.
Ok - before everyone starts laughing - this one isn’t mine. I’m helping my mate Philip out.
It’s a 1976 swb Patrol with the original engine and gearbox - and a custom camo paintjob. Philip wanted it for parts for his "Spirit of Penguin" shorty - so he was happy.
The hardtop has been sitting up the paddock for a while - but it was part of the deal, so we sat it in place and strapped it down with a heap of straps. Somehow it didn't fall off...
Dad and I prefer to use chains instead of straps to secure the vehicle to the trailer - but each to their own - it made it back to Devonport safely.
Here’s Philip’s main project - a 1977 swb that’s full of rust but runs really nicely. We’re not entirely sure of the vehicle’s history, but at some point it got the name "Spirit of Penguin" painted on the bonnet. (for non-locals, Penguin is a small coastal town west of Devonport). His plan is to use this engine and drivetrain, but replace some of the body panels with his two parts trucks.
This isn’t the first time I’ve helped Philip expand his collection either - the photo above shows "Beky" - a G60 I’d found close to Mum and Dad’s a while back that I hadn’t bought yet (see I don’t buy them all!) that I took Philip to when he said he wanted parts. Philip still has a ways to go though - he’s only on three - I have seven!

Seriously now...
A few years ago Die Hard 4.0 (aka "Live Free or Die Hard") proved that it actually is possible to create a sequel to a series like Die Hard many years after the fact and actually have a good movie.
Die Hard 4 was awesome, all things considered (at least that’s how I remember it - should rewatch it).
Die Hard 5: "A Good Day to Die Hard" came out this week - and well, it’s more like we were expecting last time.
Also known as "A Good Day to Drive a Mercedes", it’s not a bad movie - it’s just not as good as the last one. On it’s own, it wouldn’t really rate - and as a sequel, it reminds you how good the other ones were. Don’t get me wrong - I really enjoyed it. But some of the time I was enjoying laughing at the movie too.
The original title "A good day to start dying slowing of radiation poisoning" was considered too long - and the plot twist with invading Klingons has been left for the next sequel.
Yippee ki-yay!
